A Parisian landmark, a technical masterpiece in building-construction history. When the French government organized the International Exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution in 1889, a competition was held for designs for a suitable monument. More than 100 designs were submitted, and the Centennial Committee accepted that of famous bridge engineer Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel’s concept of a 300-meter (984 ft) tower built almost entirely of open-lattice iron caused astonishment, skepticism, and some opposition on aesthetic grounds. When completed, the tower served as the entrance to the fair.
Paris Eiffel Tower details
The Eiffel Tower is 324 meters tall (1,063 feet), including the antenna at the top. Without the antenna, it is 300 m (984 feet). It was the world’s tallest structure until the Chrysler Building was built in 1930 in New York.
Nothing remotely like the Eiffel Tower had ever been built. It was twice as tall as the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome or the Great Pyramid of Giza. In contrast to such older monuments, the tower was built in about two years (1887-89), with a small workforce, at little cost. Using his advanced knowledge of the behavior of metal arches and metal trusses under load, Eiffel created a light, airy, yet strong structure that predicted a revolution in civil engineering and architectural design. And, after it was opened to the public on May 15, 1889, it was finally vindicated aesthetically.
